Severed Arm Prop. Prop Severed Limbs.
Severed Arm Prop

A severed arm prop is required for a Playstation 2 game advertising campaign. To begin creating the prop, we lifecast the arm of model Matthew Reynolds. Alginate is often used for life casting, but for this piece a silicone based material is being used. The silicone comes in a dual chamber cartridge and is applied using a specialised gun which pushes two parts through a nozzle, simultaneously mixing them so it can be applied directly to the skin.

After the silicone has been applied and smoothed evenly onto the skin, a layer of hessian is added to give additional strength to what will be a long, flexible mould. More silicone is added to bind the hessian into the structure. A layer of plaster bandage is added which will support the flexible silicone layer. The underside is covered first, and when it is thoroughly dry it is given a coat of release and then the top layer is added to complete the rigid shell (mother mould).
